ENGINEERS MASTER THE ART OF FURTHERING THE WORLD
Engineering does not follow progress—it imagines it, invents it, structures it and achieves it. Engineers are motivated by development, innovation and furthering our society. But not blind development; rather they focus on scientific breakthroughs that are beneficial, accessible and sustainable.
Engineer is one of the most respected and prestigious profession with regard to the general public, as well as economic and political decision makers. Engineers are present in all aspects of our society.
Our planet has many different critical needs for innovation. For example:
- improving the power and miniaturization of computer products
- helping plants become more productive, better equipped and better for the environment
- developing materials and more productive manufacturing processes
- furthering research and development
- make international cooperation a priority with a view to eliminating inequality
- writing technical and scientific texts to share knowledge
- building roads, museums, housing, airports, etc., on our planet and others!
So much to do… and it is all possible!
THERE ARE MANY ADVANTAGES TO BECOMING AN ENGINEER
On the road to a wonderful future!
The Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec has over 60,000 members.
As an engineering student, you are choosing a profession that is increasingly in demand. Information technology, biomedical research, aerospace and telecommunications, to just name a few, are booming.
Engineers in Quebec are well trained and recognized world-wide for the excellence of their work. Our engineers are active all over the world.
The average salary of an engineer is $88,000 per year. And it continues to go up!
You will be working with relatively young professionals. The vast majority are between 30 and 49 years of age. Engineering keeps you young!
Both men and women can become engineers. It has become quite common for women to lead innovative projects in the automobile sector, or in the computer lab. So girls, let’s get cracking!
Engineering has a brilliant, profitable and stimulating future in store for you.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO ENGINEERING
At university:
Engineering studies at the Bachelor’s level are spread over seven or eight semesters. The number and types of programs vary depending on the university (the programs are generally the same from institution to institution).
For the first two years, you will take:
Basic courses especially in mathematics, computer science and applied sciences (dynamics, thermodynamics, technical drawing, materials, etc.). These highly diversified courses will help you discover and choose your specialization.
Complementary courses (human relations, engineering economics, written communication, management, etc.) are part of all programs.
For the third and four years, you will study in your chosen specialization (certain courses for your major can be started in first year).
- You will learn the principles of analysis and design in your field.
- You will also obtain sound training in computer science.
- Complementary courses are also part of the program.
- At the end of your university studies, a final major project will allow you to apply the knowledge you have acquired, and start a portfolio!
At certain universities, you will be able to switch between semesters of study on campus and paid internships in the industry. The main advantage of this is that you are obtaining work experience in your desired field of specialization while earning your Bachelor’s degree.
Among the universities that do not offer a co-op program, some will allow you to integrate paid internships in companies (credited). To make the choice that best suits your needs, talk to your guidance counsellor, the universities you are interested in and friends already studying engineering at university.
After university:
After earning your undergraduate degree, you can become an engineer by:
- Obtaining your junior engineer’s permit and becoming a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs de Québec.
- Acquiring 36 months of relevant on-the-job experience.
- Proving that you have sufficient knowledge of French
- Passing the professional examination.
- Obtaining your engineer’s permit.
Once you have obtained your engineer’s permit and are entered on to the roll of the Order, you can start working as an engineer, and use the “Eng.” after your name..
In general, to study engineering at university, you must have a college diploma in:
- Natural science or science
- Arts and literature
- Or a professional college diploma (DEC)
You must pass the following courses or their equivalents:
- Mathematics 103, 105 and 203
- Chemistry 101 and 201
- Physics 101, 201 and 301
- Biology 301

MEETING WITH AN ENGINEER CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE!
The Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec can send a speaker to your class and attend career days at your school. Talk to your teachers or guidance counsellor about this!
When you speak to those at your school who are in charge of guests (speakers and activity leaders) and documentation, tell them to visit the following site: http://www.oiq.qc.ca/students/organizer/
They will find all the information and help they’ll need.
